How to Make Croutons
How to Make Croutons
We love croutons at this farm house. We put croutons on salad, in soups, on baked potatoes and the Farm Children even like to eat them for a snack (if they can sneak it past Mom). We started making our own croutons a few months ago. It’s something I just keep on hand ready to go. We use our older bread that is oftentimes slightly stale. There numerous ways to season croutons and I’ve tried many. It’s fun to get creative while making croutons and very difficult to mess them up…unless, of course, you burn them (so sad). Even the Farm Girls have learned how to make these simple garnishes!
What you need
Bread (can be old or stale bread)
Butter or oil (we like olive oil but have used canola or coconut)
Your favorite seasoning(s)
How to Make Croutons
Cube the bread into bite size pieces.
Place them in a bowl (see note below).
Toss with 2-4 tablespoons of melted butter (or oil etc.)
Sprinkle on your favorite seasonings. (see note below)
Toss again.
Spread into a single layer on a baking sheet or 9x13 pan.
Bake in a 350 degree oven until crunchy and brown. About 20 minutes.
Enjoy them!
*A few times, I skipped this step and just placed the bread cubes in a 9x13 and tossed them in that. However, I prefer to use my bar pan which has a shorter edge, so I usually end up using the bowl. The shorter pan edge seems to toast the croutons faster.
**We have tried a variety of seasonings on these croutons. Olive oil with salt and pepper. Steak seasoning. Butter is always good (especially when you add salt and pepper). I have also used a brown sugar/bourbon seasoning. Just get creative and use what you like. You can’t go wrong on these.
